Every August, we recognize National Wellness Month, a time dedicated to building healthy habits that support long-term well-being. It’s also an excellent opportunity to learn more about diseases that affect millions of people and discover how everyday lifestyle choices can make a meaningful difference. If you’re looking for additional ways to improve your overall health, be sure to read our previous blog on National Wellness Month, where we share practical tips for healthy eating, stress management, exercise, hydration, and better sleep.

August 1 is World Lung Cancer Day, a reminder that lung cancer remains one of the most common cancers worldwide. While treatments continue to improve and survival rates have increased thanks to earlier detection, prevention remains one of our most powerful tools. Many of the risk factors associated with lung cancer are preventable, making education and healthy lifestyle choices essential for reducing your risk.

What Is Lung Cancer?

Lung cancer develops when abnormal cells in the lungs grow uncontrollably and form tumors. These tumors can interfere with the lungs’ ability to provide oxygen to the body and, if left untreated, may spread to other organs.

The two primary types are:

  • Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC): The most common form, accounting for approximately 85% of cases.
  • Small cell lung cancer (SCLC): A faster-growing, more aggressive type that is strongly associated with cigarette smoking.

Because symptoms often do not appear until the disease has progressed, regular medical checkups and awareness of your personal risk factors are extremely important.

The Main Causes and Risk Factors

Although anyone can develop lung cancer, certain factors significantly increase the risk.

Smoking

Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer. Tobacco smoke contains thousands of chemicals, many of which are known carcinogens that damage DNA and promote cancer growth.

The risk increases with:

  • Number of cigarettes smoked
  • Years of smoking
  • Exposure to secondhand smoke

The good news is that quitting smoking at any age can substantially reduce your risk over time and improve overall lung function.

Secondhand Smoke

Even if you’ve never smoked, breathing in tobacco smoke from others can increase your likelihood of developing lung cancer. Children and family members living with smokers are especially vulnerable.

Creating smoke-free homes and workplaces protects everyone.

Radon Gas

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can accumulate inside homes without any noticeable smell, color, or taste. Long-term exposure is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States.

Simple home radon testing kits can determine whether levels in your home are elevated.

Environmental and Workplace Exposure

Certain occupations expose workers to substances that may increase lung cancer risk, including:

  • Asbestos
  • Diesel exhaust
  • Arsenic
  • Chromium
  • Silica dust

Following workplace safety guidelines and wearing proper protective equipment can help reduce exposure.

Air Pollution

Long-term exposure to polluted air has been linked to an increased risk of lung disease and lung cancer. While we can’t always control outdoor air quality, limiting exposure on high-pollution days and using indoor air filtration when appropriate may help reduce risk.

Family History

Genetics can also play a role. Having a close relative with lung cancer may increase your risk, especially when combined with environmental factors.

Can Lung Cancer Be Prevented?

Although not every case can be prevented, many risk factors are within our control. Prevention focuses on reducing exposure to harmful substances while supporting the body’s natural defenses through healthy lifestyle choices.

Don’t Smoke—or Quit if You Do

Quitting smoking is the single most effective step you can take to lower your lung cancer risk. Within weeks of quitting, lung function begins to improve, and your long-term cancer risk gradually declines.

If you need support, speak with your healthcare provider about smoking cessation programs, counseling, or medications that may help.

Eat a Diet Rich in Fruits and Vegetables

A colorful diet provides vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants that help protect cells from oxidative stress and inflammation.

Focus on foods such as:

  • Broccoli
  • Kale
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Bell peppers
  • Tomatoes
  • Berries
  • Citrus fruits
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Garlic
  • Onions

These foods contain nutrients that support immune health and overall wellness.

Stay Physically Active

Regular exercise benefits nearly every system in the body. Physical activity helps maintain a healthy weight, reduces chronic inflammation, improves circulation, and supports immune function.

Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week, along with strength training at least twice weekly.

Maintain a Healthy Weight

Excess body fat contributes to chronic inflammation and has been linked to several forms of cancer. Pairing regular exercise with balanced nutrition helps support long-term health.

Protect Your Home

If you’ve never tested your home for radon, consider doing so. Testing is inexpensive and can identify a hidden risk that is easily corrected if elevated levels are found.

Limit Exposure to Harmful Chemicals

If your occupation involves hazardous materials, always follow safety procedures, wear protective equipment, and participate in workplace health screenings.

Nutrients That Support Lung Health

While no food or supplement can prevent or cure lung cancer, certain nutrients support healthy lung function and overall wellness as part of a balanced lifestyle.

Some beneficial nutrients include:

  • Vitamin C – Supports immune function and acts as an antioxidant.
  • Vitamin E – Helps protect cells from oxidative damage when obtained through foods such as almonds and sunflower seeds.
  • Beta-carotene – Found naturally in carrots and sweet potatoes, where the body converts it into vitamin A as needed.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids – Found in salmon, sardines, walnuts, and flaxseed; these healthy fats help support a normal inflammatory response.
  • Sulforaphane – A plant compound found in broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage that has been widely studied for its role in cellular health.
  • Vitamin D – Supports immune health, and maintaining adequate levels is important for overall well-being.

It’s important to obtain these nutrients primarily through whole foods rather than relying on high-dose supplements unless recommended by your healthcare provider.

Know the Warning Signs

Early detection saves lives. Contact a healthcare professional if you experience symptoms such as:

  • A cough that doesn’t go away
  • Coughing up blood
  • Chest pain
  • Persistent shortness of breath
  • Wheezing
  • Hoarseness
  • Frequent respiratory infections
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Fatigue

Individuals at high risk, including long-term smokers, may benefit from discussing low-dose CT lung cancer screening with their healthcare provider.

Small Changes Can Have a Lasting Impact

World Lung Cancer Day reminds us that prevention often begins with everyday choices. Avoiding tobacco, eating a nutrient-rich diet, exercising regularly, protecting yourself from environmental hazards, and staying informed about your personal risk factors can all contribute to healthier lungs and a healthier future.

As we celebrate National Wellness Month, remember that wellness is built through consistent habits rather than dramatic changes. Every healthy meal, every walk, every smoke-free day, and every preventive health screening is an investment in your future. By taking proactive steps today, you can help reduce your risk of lung cancer while improving your overall quality of life for years to come.
