National Nutrition Month

In this blog, I am celebrating National Nutrition Month. I find it interesting to browse and learn that every month has several different awareness’s to be aware of. I think these are important to know for the sake of prevention and of course, awareness. Not everything can be prevented, but there are still many instances that can. People should make conscious choices to prevent the worst that could happen. I have listed several categories that you can be aware of.

  • Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month: Raises awareness of colorectal cancer, the third most common cancer in the world. 
  • Red Cross Month: Honors the American Red Cross’s humanitarian mission and lifesaving work. 
  • Brain Injury Awareness Month: Raises awareness of brain injuries and MS, a disease that damages nerve tissues that connect to the brain. 
  • Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month: Raises awareness and understanding of issues affecting people with disabilities. 
  • Women’s History Month: Celebrates the contributions of women to history and society. 
  • Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Month: Raises awareness of multiple sclerosis, a disease that can damage nerve tissues. 
  • National Nutrition Month: Helps people make informed food choices and develop healthy habits. 

Because my blog itself focuses on health and nutrition, I chose to talk most about the National Nutrition month.

Origins and Purpose

First introduced as “National Nutrition Week” in 1973 and later expanded to a full month in 1980 due to its growing popularity.
Created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND), the largest organization of food and nutrition professionals in the U.S. The project aims to educate people about nutritional science, healthy eating, and the role of registered dietitians (RDs) and nutritionists in promoting wellness.

Annual Themes

Each year, National Nutrition Month has a specific theme to address different aspects of nutrition and wellness. Some past themes include:

2024 – “Beyond the Table” (Exploring the farm-to-table connection, food sustainability, and nutrition from production to consumption).
2023 – “Fuel for the Future” (Highlighting sustainable eating and nutrient-dense foods).
2022 – “Celebrate a World of Flavors” (Encouraging cultural diversity in diets).

This year’s theme for National Nutrition Month® 2025 is “Food Connects Us”, emphasizing the integral role food plays in uniting cultures, families, and communities.

Throughout March, each week focuses on a specific aspect of this theme:

Week 1: Connect with Food
Encourages individuals to explore and appreciate various foods, understanding their origins and nutritional benefits.

Week 2: Connect with a Nutrition Expert
Highlights the importance of consulting registered dietitian nutritionists for personalized dietary guidance.

Week 3: Explore the Connection Between Food and Culture
Celebrates diverse culinary traditions and their contributions to a balanced diet.

Week 4: Build the Connection Across All Stages of Life
Focuses on tailoring nutritional needs to different life stages, from infancy to older adulthood.

Key Messages of National Nutrition Month

  1. Make Informed Food Choices
    Focus on whole, minimally processed foods.
    Read food labels and understand nutritional content.
    Limit added sugars, saturated fats, and sodium.
  2. Develop Healthy Eating Habits
    Eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and dairy or dairy alternatives.
    Follow MyPlate guidelines for balanced meals.
    Stay hydrated and reduce sugary drinks.
  3. Plan & Prepare Healthy Meals
    Meal prepping and home cooking promote better nutrition.
    Learn portion control and mindful eating.

    Engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week.
    Incorporate strength training for bone and muscle health.
    Get enough sleep and manage stress effectively.
