Every July, Sarcoma Awareness Month shines a light on a rare but serious group of cancers that affect thousands of people each year. While sarcomas account for only about 1% of adult cancers, they represent approximately 15% of cancers diagnosed in children. Because these cancers are uncommon, symptoms are often overlooked or mistaken for less serious conditions, making awareness and early diagnosis especially important.

Although there is no guaranteed way to prevent sarcoma, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, eating a nutrient-rich diet, and staying informed about your body can support overall health and potentially reduce some cancer risk factors. This month serves as a reminder to learn the warning signs, encourage early medical evaluation, and support those affected by this disease.

What Is Sarcoma?

Sarcoma is a broad term for cancers that develop in the body’s connective tissues. Unlike more common cancers that begin in organs or glands, sarcomas originate in tissues that support and connect the body, including:

  • Bones
  • Muscles
  • Fat
  • Blood vessels
  • Tendons
  • Ligaments
  • Cartilage
  • Nerves
  • Fibrous tissue

There are more than 70 different subtypes of sarcoma, generally divided into two main categories:

Soft Tissue Sarcoma

Soft tissue sarcomas begin in muscles, fat, tendons, nerves, and other soft tissues. They can develop almost anywhere in the body but most commonly occur in the arms, legs, chest, abdomen, or pelvis.

Bone Sarcoma

Bone sarcomas begin in the bones themselves. Examples include osteosarcoma, Ewing sarcoma, and chondrosarcoma. These cancers are more frequently diagnosed in children, adolescents, and young adults.

Signs and Symptoms

One challenge with sarcoma is that symptoms often appear gradually and may not seem alarming at first.

Possible warning signs include:

  • A painless lump or swelling that continues to grow
  • Persistent bone pain
  • Pain that worsens at night
  • Difficulty moving a joint or limb
  • Unexplained fractures after minor injuries
  • Abdominal pain or fullness (for tumors located internally)
  • Persistent swelling that does not improve

Not every lump is cancer, but any mass that continues growing, becomes painful, or measures larger than approximately two inches (about the size of a golf ball) should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.

Who Is at Risk?

Most sarcomas develop without a clearly identifiable cause. However, researchers have identified several factors that may increase risk.

These include:

  • Certain inherited genetic conditions
  • Previous radiation therapy
  • Long-term swelling caused by lymphedema
  • Exposure to some industrial chemicals
  • Certain rare inherited syndromes

Most people diagnosed with sarcoma have no obvious risk factors, which is why paying attention to unusual changes in the body remains important.

Why Early Diagnosis Matters

Early detection can make a significant difference in treatment options and outcomes.

Because sarcomas often begin deep within muscles or connective tissue, they may grow quite large before causing noticeable symptoms. When diagnosed early, treatment may be less extensive and the likelihood of successful management is generally higher.

Diagnosis often involves:

  • Physical examination
  • Imaging tests such as MRI or CT scans
  • Biopsy to confirm the diagnosis
  • Additional imaging to determine whether the cancer has spread

If sarcoma is suspected, patients are often referred to specialists with experience treating these rare cancers.

Treatment Options

Treatment depends on several factors, including the type, location, size, and stage of the tumor.

Common treatments include:

Surgery

Surgery is the primary treatment for many sarcomas. The goal is to remove the tumor while preserving as much healthy tissue and function as possible.

Radiation Therapy

Radiation may be used before or after surgery to reduce the risk of recurrence.

Chemotherapy

Some sarcomas respond well to chemotherapy, particularly certain bone sarcomas and high-grade soft tissue sarcomas.

Targeted and Immunotherapies

Newer treatments target specific characteristics of cancer cells or help the immune system recognize and attack cancer. These therapies continue to improve outcomes for some patients and are an active area of research.

Can Nutrition Help Prevent Sarcoma?

Currently, there is no food, vitamin, mineral, or dietary supplement that has been proven to prevent sarcoma. Because sarcomas are rare and arise from many different causes, no specific nutritional strategy has been shown to eliminate the risk.

However, maintaining overall health through a balanced diet is associated with a lower risk of several chronic diseases, including many common cancers. A healthy eating pattern also supports immune function, reduces chronic inflammation, and helps maintain a healthy weight—all of which contribute to long-term wellness.

Nutrients That Support Overall Health

While they have not been proven to prevent sarcoma specifically, these nutrients play important roles in maintaining healthy cells and supporting normal body functions.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C acts as an antioxidant, helping protect cells from oxidative stress. It is also essential for collagen production, wound healing, and immune function.

Good food sources include:

  • Strawberries
  • Oranges
  • Bell peppers
  • Kiwi
  • Broccoli

Vitamin D

Vitamin D supports bone health and helps regulate immune function. Many adults have inadequate vitamin D levels, especially those with limited sun exposure. Supplementation may be appropriate for individuals who are deficient, but it is best guided by a healthcare provider.

Food sources include:

  • Fatty fish
  • Fortified dairy products
  • Egg yolks

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fats help support heart health and may help regulate normal inflammatory processes throughout the body.

Sources include:

  • Salmon
  • Sardines
  • Walnuts
  • Chia seeds
  • Flaxseed

Fiber

A diet rich in fiber supports digestive health, helps regulate blood sugar, and contributes to a healthy gut microbiome.

Excellent sources include:

  • Beans
  • Lentils
  • Whole grains
  • Fruits
  • Vegetables

Colorful Plant Foods

Eating a wide variety of colorful fruits and vegetables provides vitamins, minerals, fiber, and naturally occurring plant compounds such as carotenoids and flavonoids. While these compounds are associated with overall health, no supplement or specific food has been shown to prevent sarcoma.

Should You Take Supplements?

For most people, nutrients are best obtained through a varied, balanced diet. Supplements can be useful when a healthcare provider identifies a deficiency or increased nutritional need, but high-dose vitamin or antioxidant supplements have not been shown to prevent sarcoma.

If you’re considering supplements, discuss them with your healthcare provider, particularly if you have a history of cancer or are undergoing treatment, as some supplements can interact with medications or therapies.

Supporting Someone Living With Sarcoma

A sarcoma diagnosis affects more than physical health. Emotional support and practical assistance can make a meaningful difference.

Ways to help include:

  • Accompany them to appointments.
  • Prepare nutritious meals.
  • Offer help with daily tasks.
  • Listen without judgment.
  • Encourage them to seek support groups or counseling if desired.

Small acts of kindness can provide comfort during treatment and recovery.

Raising Awareness Saves Lives

Although sarcoma is rare, awareness can lead to earlier diagnosis and better outcomes. Knowing the warning signs, seeking medical evaluation for persistent or unusual symptoms, and supporting ongoing research are all meaningful ways to participate in Sarcoma Awareness Month.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle—including regular physical activity, a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats, avoiding tobacco, limiting alcohol, and keeping up with routine medical care—supports overall well-being and may reduce the risk of many diseases. While these habits cannot guarantee prevention of sarcoma, they are valuable steps toward lifelong health.

This July, take a few moments to learn about sarcoma, share reliable information with family and friends, and encourage anyone with persistent or unusual symptoms to seek medical evaluation. Increased awareness may help more people receive an earlier diagnosis and the care they need.
