I recently decided to do a little research on the world’s healthiest countries. The research can be a little complex as there are several studies that choose rankings. I chose to go with the “Bloomberg Healthiest Countries Index.” This was a 2019 study where the rankings were based on: Health risks (tobacco use, high blood pressure, obesity); Availability of clean water; Average life expectancy; Malnutrition; and Causes of death.
There was a total of 169 countries that were included in the study. The U.S. ranked as the 35th with a score of 75. While the U.S. usually gets targeted for obesity, it still is above average in the total number of countries. The U.S. still has goals to achieve when taking care of its overall health and well-being. The top 3 leading countries of the Bloomberg Index are: Spain, Italy, and Iceland. I thought it would be fun to share the top leading countries of the world’s cultural lifestyles. I am starting with the 25th-ranked country with a score of 82.69, Denmark.

Denmark’s Place in Global Health Rankings
When global health rankings are released, Denmark consistently lands among the top. This Scandinavian country is not just known for its stunning architecture, innovative design, and cultural concept of hygge—it is also praised for the well-being of its people. But what makes Denmark such a healthy nation? The answer lies in a combination of diet, lifestyle, social structure, and cultural values that prioritize balance and happiness.
Whereas many countries struggle with chronic diseases tied to diet and inactivity, Denmark benefits from a lifestyle that keeps people moving, eating balanced meals, and maintaining lower stress levels.
In this blog, we’ll explore why Denmark is one of the healthiest countries in the world, what types of meals and foods Danes eat, and how their culture and lifestyle contribute to long-term health. There will be a follow-up blog after this one that will include several Danish recipes.
The Danish Diet: A Blend of Tradition and Health
Food is at the heart of Danish culture, and the traditional diet contributes heavily to national health. While it shares similarities with the broader Nordic diet, Denmark has its own unique flavors and traditions.

Main Types of Meals in Denmark
- Breakfast (morgenmad)
- Typically light, often consisting of rye bread with cheese, cold cuts, or jam, along with coffee or tea.
- Oatmeal and yogurt topped with berries and nuts are also common.
- Lunch (frokost)
- Lunch is usually a cold meal, often centered around smørrebrød, Denmark’s famous open-faced sandwiches on rye bread topped with fish, meat, cheese, or vegetables.
- This meal is designed to be both nutritious and satisfying without being overly heavy.
- Dinner (aftensmad)
- The main hot meal of the day, usually consisting of meat or fish with potatoes and vegetables.
- Meals are often simple, with fresh, seasonal ingredients.
- Snacks and Coffee Culture
- Coffee is a staple in Danish daily life. It is often accompanied by a small pastry, though pastries are typically enjoyed in moderation.
- Nuts, fruit, or crispbread may be eaten between meals.
Key Foods in the Danish Diet
- Rye bread (rugbrød): A fiber-rich, dense bread that forms the base of many meals.
- Fish: Herring, salmon, mackerel, and cod are staples, rich in omega-3 fatty acids.
- Root vegetables: Carrots, potatoes, beets, and parsnips are consumed regularly.
- Cabbages and leafy greens: Cabbage, kale, and Brussels sprouts are popular, particularly in winter.
- Dairy: Yogurt, buttermilk, and cheeses are consumed often but in balanced portions.
- Meat: Pork and poultry are common, though portion sizes are often smaller than in the U.S. diet.
- Seasonal berries and fruits: Strawberries, apples, and blackcurrants are Danish favorites.
This dietary pattern closely resembles the New Nordic Diet, a movement that began in Denmark and emphasizes local, seasonal, sustainable foods. Research has shown that this diet helps lower blood pressure, reduce cholesterol, and decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Lifestyle Choices That Promote Health
Danish health is not only about what they eat—it is deeply tied to lifestyle. Here are some of the biggest contributing factors:
1. Cycling and Active Transportation
Denmark is famous for its cycling culture. Copenhagen is consistently ranked one of the most bike-friendly cities in the world. Nearly 62% of residents commute to work or school by bicycle, which provides daily exercise without requiring extra time at the gym. Walking is also common, and urban planning encourages movement over car dependency.
2. Strong Work-Life Balance
Danes typically work fewer hours per week than the global average and prioritize personal and family time. Vacations are longer, and stress levels are generally lower. This contributes to both mental and physical health.
3. Hygge: The Culture of Coziness
The Danish concept of hygge—a sense of coziness, comfort, and well-being—permeates daily life. This cultural value encourages people to slow down, connect with friends and family, and enjoy simple pleasures like sharing a meal or lighting candles on a winter night. The reduced stress from embracing hygge plays a big role in national health.

4. Social Equality and Community Support
Denmark has one of the strongest social support systems in the world. Universal healthcare, accessible education, and generous parental leave policies reduce stress and provide a sense of security. Social connections are also strong, with high rates of civic participation and trust in community.
5. Outdoor Living
Despite the cold climate, Danes spend significant time outdoors. From gardening to hiking to sea swimming, outdoor activity is seen as essential to health. The saying “There’s no bad weather, only bad clothing” reflects this attitude.
Cultural Facts That Influence Health
- Seasonal Eating: Danish cuisine revolves around seasonal produce. Eating fresh, in-season vegetables and fruits ensures nutrient-rich meals throughout the year.
- Moderation in Indulgence: While Danes enjoy pastries, beer, and cured meats, they consume them in moderation. Balance is more important than strict restriction.
- Community Meals: Food is often shared in a family or community setting, which reinforces healthy eating habits and social well-being.
- Public Health Campaigns: Denmark has strong anti-smoking laws, public education on nutrition, and widespread promotion of active living.

Lessons from Denmark: How to Apply Their Lifestyle
Other countries can learn much from Denmark’s approach to health:
- Eat whole foods: Focus on fresh, seasonal, and minimally processed foods.
- Incorporate more fish and vegetables: These are staples of the Danish diet.
- Stay active daily: Even small amounts of movement, like walking or biking, have long-term benefits.
- Prioritize balance: Work-life harmony, social time, and relaxation reduce chronic stress.
- Embrace simplicity: Meals, leisure, and home life don’t need to be complicated—just wholesome and balanced.

Conclusion
Denmark’s reputation as one of the healthiest countries in the world is no accident. Their diet is rich in whole grains, fish, vegetables, and seasonal produce. Their lifestyle emphasizes movement, community, balance, and joy. And their cultural values, from hygge to strong social support systems, create an environment where health is a natural part of life.
While no nation is perfect, Denmark offers an inspiring example of how food, culture, and lifestyle can combine to create a healthier society. By taking cues from Danish habits—whether it’s adding more rye bread and fish to our diets, biking to work, or practicing hygge—we can move closer to a healthier, more balanced way of living.
